Washington moot wants US role on Kashmir

WASHINGTON: The United States should play its role in resolving the Kashmir issue, European legislators and experts said at a conference on 'Kashmir Issue - Centrality of Kashmiris' Rights' on Monday.

The speakers included Washington-based Kashmir Centre Executive Director Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, Norwegian Parliament Deputy Speaker Ola Lanke, British House of Lords Member Lord Nazir Ahmed and World Kashmir Freedom Movement President Dr Ghulam Nabi Mir. They said the US and European lawmakers should help end human rights violations in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK). Lord Nazir suggested that members of the US Congress, the Norwegian Parliament and the British Parliament should monitor the human rights situation in the occupied territory. "We talk about mass graves in various parts of the world - there were some in Iraq - the United Nations should also look into mass graves in Kashmir..."

Lanke reminded US President Barack Obama of his pre-poll pledge to help resolve the Kashmir issue. He said the "history-making president" should pay attention to curtail tension in South Asia. The lawmaker said several members of the Norwegian Parliament had voiced against human rights violations in IHK. "We all know how bad the situation is in Kashmir. The world must do what it can to encourage a fair settlement of Kashmir," Lanke said. Fai urged the Obama administration to appoint a special envoy for Kashmir. Mir said India had employed "heinous means" to silence Kashmiris for decades. app
